Antalya Oldtown

Kaleiçi is the name given to the city center surrounded by the sea and land walls located within the boundaries of Muratpaşa district of Antalya. The streets and structures of Kaleiçi bring traces of Antalya history to the present day. The importance of old houses conveys very useful information not only in terms of architecture, but also about people's lifestyle, behavior, traditions and social aspects.
The streets of Kaleici are narrow. Often they extend from the port upwards in the direction of the outer walls. Houses may differ according to their owners' economic powers and usage purposes. But their common characteristics are many. They are usually made of masonry and wood. All of them have a street facade and a street-free garden. Facing the street, there are very few windows on the first floor. On the upper floor, there are climbs called "Cumba" and made in accordance with both home and street architecture. These overhangs are decorated with tree ornaments. The center of the houses are "Stony" on the ground floor, opening to the garden and with stone floors. There are wooden sofas in these stony places. It is possible to go to the rooms on the ground floor from here, and the upper floor is reached by a staircase. The ground floor is mostly the service part of the house. Rooms with storage, kitchen, etc. are available here. The top floor is for life. The rooms of the upper floor are brighter as the windows are larger. Often these rooms have two rows of windows in a row. The upper windows are without glass and consist of wooden cages, the lower windows are openable and closed. On the upper windows of the bay windows are small and usually colored glasses. Many houses in Kaleiçi have been restored to their original form. Today, Kaleiçi has become a tourism center with entertainment venues, hostels, restaurants, souvenir shops and antique carpet shops. In addition, the most famous of the historical mosques in Kaleiçi is the Yivli Minaret Mosque, which is seen as the symbol of Antalya.
